I’m back from Silverstone for Formula Student and let me tell you, it exceeded all of my expectations. Prepare for a shit load of content coming of this incredible event. Let me start from the beginning…

Wednesday: the car was finished and stickered up so a little presentation was held in the engineering center before leaving.

The decals definitely make the car look racey.

After a few cups of tea, biscuits and some mingling with lecturers it was time to leave.

I was given a car to use throughout the event, a lovely Vauxhall Insignia. More on this later.

After the 3 hour drive we set up camp at the Copse camp site just off the track. I was immediately shocked at the amount of people and their set up. Some teams had full on race trucks and gear.

Next up was to unload the car into the pits. I thought it was awesome that we could work in the main pit boxes, there were a lot of hints of the F1 race held the weekend before. It was weird to think we were using the very same pits that Formula 1 teams were using.

After unloading I decided to size up the competition and have a wander down through the other pits.

There was some pro stuff.

I mean proper incredible work and technology.

Crazy Australians.

As seen on a Formula 1, true story.

As all of the cars are built by students, you can’t trust them… jk, but there is a lot of scrutineering involved. 5 test need to be passed before you can race and you get 2 full days to do so.

Safety inspection, technical inspection, a tilt test, which took us a few attempts to pass. 60 degrees isn’t little, it felt vertical when sitting in the car. Our rear right wheel was lifting because it was supposed to, to help with the spool. So we had to adjust the springs and pre-load to try and stop it happening,…

… a noise test and a brake test.

The brake test also took us a few attempts. After cracking the disk at Llandow on Monday and replacing it we had no time to break it in, so it had to be done during the brake test.

Great Success. All stickers acquired.

That’s it for now.
